BOSTON - The winner of a $1 million lottery scratch ticket may not be so lucky after all: He’s a convicted bank robber who isn’t supposed to gamble. Timothy Elliott faces a Dec. 7 court hearing over whether he violated his probation when he bought the $10 ticket for the $800 Million Spectacular game at a supermarket in Hyannis.

Elliott was placed on five years’ probation after pleading guilty in October 2006 to unarmed robbery for a January 2006 heist at a bank on Cape Cod. Under terms of his probation, he “may not gamble, purchase lottery tickets or visit an establishment where gaming is conducted, including restaurants where Keno may be played.”

I subscribe to a very reputable magazine from England. I live in North America.

This month’s issue came with a scratch and win ticket. The prizes included cash awards of up to one million pounds, a Mercedes Benz, and various other prizes.

Anyway, I scratched and I WON!!!

But then I read the rules and it said that the contest was “across UK only”.

Is there any way that I can still collect my prize? Or am I ineligible?

About a year ago here in the UK, Burger King ran a promotion where one could win various prizes from a scratchcard they distributed with Whopper Burgers. Promotional materials said ‘No Purchase Necessary’ and so I visited one branch and asked for a No Purchase Necessary entry, but the Manager refused and told me to leave, saying that he would only give me a scratchcard if I purchased a burger. I pointed out that it said clearly on the advertising in the restaurant that it was a No Purchase necessary competition. But he said he didn’t care. Was this illegal and what should I have done??
