Does anyone know of any cream or medicine I can buy online that really works to help dogs with allergies?
My two shelties have recently started itcing like crazy since we moved in to our new place. I’ve seen ONE flea and trust me we’ve searched so I really honestly don’t think it’s a flea allergy. I am sure there is more fleas but this is something else I am posotive of it. One dog seems to bite at her back more than anything and the other one seems to itch her belly. They both have scratches all over their belly from this and a patch of missing hair onthe ones back. I called the vet and they suggested I try benadryl first. It helps but isn’t helping enough. I have an appointment for the vet but am not financially set right now to spend as much money as she said it would cost just to start testing and the shot they give them is $30 some dollars each. I don’t have credit cards so that wont help. I would like to try to find something as a trial and error and see if it helps before I spend all the money at the vet. I have one week before their vet visit to try something. Any suggestion?
I gave my two girls a oatmeal bath today and made sure to get all the shampoo out and suprisingly it made them itch even worse. So I went to a local pet store and tried buying a spray called Anti Itch Spary by Pet Relief. It was a shot in the dark but suprisingly it seems to be working. They are itcing only about 5% of the time now and it seems to be more of the usual itch dogs do now and then. I am starting to think more and more it’s hot spots due to the heat as we now live in a trailer where as we used to live in a house. This Trailer isn’t as cool as our house was. I’ll keep trying this and talk to the vet later next week near my appointment date. Thanks everyone. PS – it’s not mange, I have seen mange, this isn’t that.

You need to “bug bomb” your house, flea powder your carpets and furniture, have your dogs flea dipped. They have special shampoo that you can buy at the pet store with anti-itch properties. If itching is isolated to 1 spot you can use benedril cream or you can also use Hyrocortizone cream.
Are you sure you’re giving enough benadryl? Dogs metabolize benadryl differently and the dose per lb for dogs is much higher than humans.
One thing tht worked for my allergy dog was that i got oatmeal strained water over the oatmeal. The water from that, I put in a spray bottle and sprayed on their itchy spots. Seemed to work ok.
I would definitely try to the vet though — could be demodex, mange, a yeast infection, staph infection, etc etc.
Normally.. HUMAN medicines should NOT be given to animals(pets). One of the exceptions is that of glucosymine and the other that I know of is benadrdyl. I would try benedryl.. one in the morning and one in the evening to see if that takes care of its allergies.
Benadryl is what vets will tell you to give your pet. Call your vet first to find out what dose to give him. The vet will know how much to give him/her.
Sounds like it could be mange or yeast — do not try to self-medicate — you could do some real harm…explain to the vet your financial dilemma…if he/she is not amenable to a payment structure, find another vet…vets are not in the practice for the money (you never see a vet with a 5000 sq ft house like an regular people doctor) they want to help sick animals. It’s probably something in the rugs. Have u recently cleaned them?? The perfumes may be irrating their skin. They may have a heat rash…but ive always used baby products on my dogs..just because of weight etc…try giving them an oatmeal bath…
If you see one flea, then you can bet he’s got a 100 buddies nearby. Vacuum, then sprinkle Twenty Mule Team Borax on the carpet. Keep doing this for at least a couple of weeks. The borax in the product will kill the fleas in the carpet, but not the eggs. They will die as they hatch.
Get a topical spot on for the dogs. Frontline and Advantage from the vet both work. Bio Spot, which is otc, also works. A lot of the others do not work or only work short time, so don’t buy them.
Keep giving the Benadryl to help the dogs. Here’s a weblink with the correct dosage by weight.
You may be able to use Predisone in the pill form
You do not have to give it every day and it is not expensive.
It is however a steriod and you do not want to give if it you do not need to.
My vet gave a shot and some oft he pills I only had to give like one pill and they were good for about a week or more.
And we did it one year and after that I had no more problems.
They benedryl is a good answer and you can give it twice per day. We used it on one of mine for a time.
