We all think that scratch cards are worthless after they have been used. After all we buy the scratchcards, then we play them, then if we haven’t won, we put them in the bin don’t we? Well it may be worth holding on to some used scratch cards to see if they will get you some money in the future.
If you live in the US, for example, then losing lottery scratch off could well give you some money in the future. Due to the fact that you pay taxes on your winnings, you can set off your losses against your winnings and claim tax relief on them. So if you win $1,000 on a scratch card, you can set off losing scratchcards up to the value of $1,000 and claim tax back on these, so they can give you some money back.
If you live in the UK, then you will not be able to claim tax relief on your scratchcard losses, but you may still make some money on the traditional type of scratch card. Obviously online scratch games cannot be retained, but the scratchcard that you buy in the shops can be kept and similar to online scratch cards, these are replaced on a regular basis and this can make them of interest to collectors.
The market currently is not buoyant, but already in the US some people are starting to collect used scratch cards. The more special the graphics are on the card, then the more value it has. If the scratch card is a limited edition or to celebrate something like the Olympics for example, then it may have a future value. So not all scratch cards will be valuable, but those that are a little bit special will have some kind of value. It is important to stay realistic, these cards are not likely to make you a millionaire, you may only get what you paid for the card, but that could be a way of getting free scratch cards.
If like me you prefer to go to the scratch card sites , play scratch games and online scratch cards then you may be sceptical about the value of losing scratch cards, but it is worth holding on to any traditional cards that catch your eye. No one can predict the future so there is no guarantee, but that is part of the fun isn’t it?
